Electric Chevy Spark Tests on Public Roads in Southern California

Many electric car advocates wish that General Motors had simply revived the EV1 rather than producing the elaborate, complex and expensive Chevy Volt. It would have been faster and cheaper to make the EV2. Perhaps the upcoming Chevy Spark EV—GM’s first all-electric car since the EV1—will represent a course correction toward pure electrification (despite the marketing hyperbole from GM about the superiority of the extended-range EV approach). The Spark EV is scheduled to go on sale in 2013.

We know that the Spark platform, a minicompact, slots below the Chevrolet Sonic. We know that batteries for the electric Spark will come from A123 Systems. But we're still lacking key details such as range, production quantities and price—although it's certainly has to be considerably more affordable than the $39,000-plus Chevy Volt.

Taking a page from the Volt playbook—which was promoted like mad for years before the vehicle came to market—GM is inviting attention and scrutiny of the Spark EV while in development. It's a coy and clever move. "The [camouflage] is on, but we're inviting spy photographers and enthusiasts alike to come find us," said Trista Schieffer, lead development engineer for the electric Chevrolet Spark.

Schieffer and other GM engineers have been testing the Chevy Spark EV in public. The team recently conducted their "65% calibration drive." The Spark door panels have been equipped with those scannable Quick Response (QR) codes that allow curious observers to use smart phones to immediately access Spark-related info on the Chevrolet VoltAge website. Whether or not the price and production numbers for the Spark EV match the cleverness and commitment of GM's marketing strategies remains to be seen.
