Chevrolet Spark

Overall: After much success overseas, the Spark comes to North American shores to compete in growing compact car segment

Drivetrain: The Spark's 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine won't blow drivers away with its 85 horsepower. But who is buying the Spark for horsepower?

? It doesn't take a genius to understand who General Motors was thinking of when it designed the 2013 Chevrolet Spark mini car, revealed to North American audiences at last fall's Los Angeles International Auto Show.

The sporty four-passenger, fivedoor hatch - already on sale in Europe, Asia, Australia, Mexico and South America - is clearly designed for first-time buyers and city dwellers with its bold styling and colours, affordability, the safety of 10 standard airbags and fuel efficiency.

Though compact, the Spark offers more passenger and cargo room than other mini cars such as the Fiat 500, Smart fortwo and Scion iQ.

Under the hood, the Spark is powered by a 1.2-litre dualoverhead cam four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing that delivers an estimated 85 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission is standard. A four-speed automatic transmission is also available.

Inside, the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, included on 1LT and 2LT Spark models, is accessible through a seven-inch colour touch screen. With MyLink, Spark buyers can bring their customized music libraries into the vehicle and use their smartphones and Bluetooth connectivity to access Internet radio and navigation.

The Spark was designed with occupant safety in mind, having won safety awards in both Europe and Korea. For North America, it features crash-avoidance technologies such as StabiliTrak and anti-lock brakes.

The Spark is also equipped with 10 standard airbags, including both driver and passenger front knee airbags. Dual-stage frontal airbags, seat-mounted side airbags and side curtain airbags that extend over the front and rear seating rows are also standard.

Other safety technologies include rollover sensing system. The Spark also is equipped with the OnStar safety and security system.
